Kevin and the Old Sock

My darling Kevin,

This is a letter I wrote to your Great-Grandpa today: “Dear Grandpa,
Kevin is growing so fast, it’s amazing! He has doubled his birth weight and is 10 cm longer than when he was born. He is a wonderful boy and now sleeps right though the night from 10 pm to 7 am, which suits us perfectly. It’s such fun to watch his skills developing. He holds his head very well and turns it in order to follow our movements. He can now roll from his back onto his side, and when placed on his belly, lifts his whole head and shoulders well clear of the floor, to devour everything with his gaze. He has only just started grasping with his hands, but so far spurns all the pretty plastic toys he owns, in favour of an old sock, which he enjoys kneading!

Best of all are his smiles and chuckles! When he’s really having fun and frolics with his Daddy, he sometimes gives a loud and rather raucous burst of laughter! His squeals can be quite ear-piercing too. And of course, when he’s feeding in my arms, or asleep on my shoulder, I can honestly say I have never known such happiness.”

Baby Kevin in the South of France

My darling Kevin,

You’re 3 months old today and all I can really think of to say is that you’re bigger, heavier and smilier than ever before! You seem such a happy baby, which is a great relief to us, as it means we must be doing something right!

You’re certainly a well-travelled baby already, as you’ve had a weekend in Brittany, a day in Normandy, and we’re presently nearing the end of our two-week holiday at the Presqu’Ile de Giens in Provence (Var). We even had a day in St Tropez.

You are eating and sleeping extremely well and you’re such a joy to us when you’re awake as you smile and laugh most of the time. You are extremely alert and interested in everything that’s going on around you. We often take you out down to the little port and show you the boats, seagulls and waves Unfortunately the wind is quite strong though, and the sunlight makes you screw up your eyes. However, we avoid putting you in your pram when we go out on foot, as you can’t see anything new and quickly get bored.

You’re such a brave boy when we give you your nasty-tasting medicine: you always drink it down without complaining and I know how bitter it tastes. I can’t wait for the day we can stop giving you all these drugs. Your most recent interest seems to be the lettering on your Daddy’s T-shirts. You stare at the slogans as if fascinated! I took a photo of you “reading” the timetable for the local ferry service to the Ile de Porquerolles!

If you are interested in reading these words one day when you’re older, let me tell you that we love you so much, and you are even lovelier than we could have imagined. We are thrilled and proud of you, our son. People are always asking if you look like me or your Daddy and whose personality you have inherited, but those are stupid questions, as you are you, entirely 100% KEVIN! I should thank you too, for being so patient with us when we make mistakes, or handle you roughly. Sometimes it’s so hard to know if we’ve dressed you properly, if you’ve had enough or too much to eat, if we’re entertaining and amusing you as we should. At times it can be very scary, being a parent. But you never complain, only gently correct us when we do something wrong. I know it can’t be easy for you sometimes too!
