Kevin - Puller of Hair, Cheeks & Ears!

Dear Kevin,

Your latest trick to make us laugh is to push your tongue as far as it will go into your lower lip and then twirl it round! It looks so funny and you do it several times a day. You’re learning so many new things, and so fast.

When you sit on my knees at the table, you like to thump your hands quite aggressively on the table-top. Previously you used to pull my hair and bat at my face very hard, enough to hurt, but now you stroke my face very gently, which is lovely. You also like to hold on to my ear when I’m walking you around, and when I’m feeding you and looking down at you, you hold my chin! When Pépé and Méemée were here the other day, you made us all laugh by holding tightly onto Pépé’s cheek and then burping loudly in his face!

When I gave you your bath last night, you held on to your willy and twisted it round! Your Daddy is afraid you’ll hurt yourself, but I know you are just exploring everything you can reach with your hands.

Kevin ‘almost-sitting-up-but-constantly-tipping-over’

Kevin, you’re almost 6 months old now, and your eyes are definitely brown. You are becoming very agile and when you are lying on your back or sitting up on my lap you manage to catch your toes with your hands. In fact, you like sitting up and leaning forward so much, that when we try and put you in your bouncy chair, you don’t want to lean backwards in the reclining position any more, you immediately lean forwards and bend at the waist to catch your feet! We have to gently push you back and strap you firmly in, otherwise you would topple out!

Here’s a letter I’ve been sending to my friends lately: “... Kevin is almost six months old already! Most of the worries we had at the beginning are forgotten now (although he is still on medication for his digestion and irregular heartbeat, and will be for another six months), so we have now learned to just relax and enjoy him. He’s such a happy baby, and so easy to look after; we must be doing it right! We never knew before just how much fun even a small baby can be. He’s at the ‘almost-sitting-up-but-constantly-tipping-over’ stage, and also grabs at everything that comes within reach including eyes, noses, hair, etc. So I can no longer drink hot cups of tea or coffee when he’s sitting on my lap. He has an amazing range of different laughs, and “talks” a lot: wonder who he gets it from?! When a pretty female news reader appears on TV he squeals, but most male announcers make him laugh! He eats really well now, we no longer have to force him to stay awake for the duration of each feed. I enjoy making puréed fruit and vegies for him (trying to be the perfect Mum, of course – and it’s a small consolation for not being able to breast feed), and so he likes everything except green beans.

He’s getting really energetic with his arms and legs, but shows no signs of crawling yet, as he doesn’t like to be put on his tummy for more than a few minutes. I wonder if he’s going to roll everywhere, instead of crawling.

I’m afraid this is a very gushy letter, but quite honestly, I can’t talk about anything else! As you can see, we’re really happy with Kevin, he’s a real sweetheart. P. is a fantastic father and a big help to me. I couldn’t do it without him.”
